Rebel Bride

by Morgan K. Wyatt

BLURB:

Eileen Sewell sparks plenty of gossip by spiteful matrons and their horse-faced
daughters that she’d find herself alone due to her picky ways. Of course, she didn’t believe them. Then again, she also didn’t expect to be a mail order bride either. It wasn’t easy snagging a husband who hadn’t heard about her willful nature. Eileen finally gave up hope of finding love, and decided to settle for whatever she’d find out west. If that wasn’t lowering enough, she’d just witnessed the first train robbery. Unfortunately, the outlaws saw her too. Enter Marshal Colt Sheppard, who excels at extracting information from reticent witnesses. His crooked smile and broad shoulders shouldn’t charm her. She’d played this game before, only she never had a worthy adversary. Talk about bad timing.

EXCERPT:

What did men like more than beautiful women with lots of hair? Biddable women who jumped to serve a man’s every command. As a redhead, she had to downplay the fiery temper associated with her hair colour. She continued the letter.image

I am anxious to have an intelligent man, like you, to guide me and instruct me on how to be the most pleasing wife possible.

The ink puddled on the last word. “Even the ink objects to such a noxious statement.” Luckily, no one would see the letter except for Montgomery. The fact he lived hundreds of miles away happened to be another benefit. No reason for him to hear about her pernickety ways in refusing every man who ever dared to attempt to court her. Some old biddies in the region would decidedly embellish the tale, making her seem difficult and unreasonable. How untrue. Her only fault was, she believed she should get what she wanted.

An unnamed man with broad shoulders, a wicked glint in his eyes, and a knowing smile stood somewhere off in the wings marking time, or so she’d believed. She kept waiting for him to appear, turning aside suitable men, somehow knowing deep down of his existence. Apparently, the feeling must have been no more than an on-going case of indigestion. Now, instead of her perfect man, she’d settle for a man she could handle perfectly. Being the reigning belle of the county taught her innumerable skills, and she was determined to put every one of them to good use on Montgomery.

The man wasted a good six months sending letters back and forth getting to know her. He took his time sending the money for the ticket, in her opinion. Each letter she wrote as a biddable future wife was worse than the one before. How could the man read them and not sicken? Finally, he sent the money with very specific instructions for travel as if she were a simpleton, which in fairness her letters probably led him to believe it.

AUTHOR Bio:

clip_image006Morgan as a child had to suffer through movies with clueless heroines rescued by smart men. Her mother dutifully read her stories where princesses waited for princes to jumpstart their lives. There were no proactive female role models in the media at that time, with the exception of Wonder Woman. It is for this reason, and that it is fun, Morgan writes about strong women going after what they want.

  38. A fun excerpt. You have her character so clear that I know her from this short bit. Excellent!
And I too am a tragic survivor of the ‘female do nothing’ culture. It took a while to gnaw myself from the trap. I’m glad that you have done so with strength and humor. Well done interview ladies!
